KY FI

If someone told me to write a book on morality, it would have a hundred pages and ninety-nine of them would be blank. On the last page I would write, “I recognize only one duty and that is to love.” And as far as everything else is concerned, I say no.
Last night, I had the most wonderful and vivid dream about one of these whales. A new tank at an aquarium had been created to hold a humpback and was having a soft opening for the public to see. Waiting to see the whale made me anxious and emotional… I couldn’t wait. I wanted to press my face up to the thick, cool glass and stare into the eyes of this beautiful creature. The line of people waiting in front of me rumbled in an burst of anger as I pushed my way through the crowds to break through this set of double doors and get the first look for myself. I didn’t care. I needed to see her, needed to connect with her. My moment next to the tank was brief and rushed before I was pushed away from viewing the whale. Sadness filled me too quickly.
And then I woke up.
A picture of the whale was pressed into my mind for the course of the day. As cruel as it would be to keep such a large, wild, inspiring animal in captivity for mere human enjoyment… there’s a selfish little piece of me that craves that closeness.
Megaptera novaeangliae.
